Rocketship was founded in the year 2006, and it is situated in San Jose, Calif. It is a free chain, public k-5 college prep-5 charter schools. In 2012, Rocketship dealt with five schools which had a population of around 450 students per school in San Jose area. Majority of the students in the various schools were offered with lunch, 75% of them spoke English as their second language since they were affected by their mother tongue. Rocketship motto stated that “Every child deserves an excellent education, that every child can attend a four-year college, and that the path to college starts with kindergarten.
The rocketship prep founded by Danner brought the achievement gap difference between the poor and the privileged children in the society. The gap grew stronger despite a lot of investment of time, energy and money. The less privileged children joined the school at a very late stage, and they never caught up quickly, and this discouraged them a lot hence they opted to drop out and joined the underclass people who brought the country’s economy down.
The policymakers, foundations and many business leaders came to educate all children even when there was not enough income. Their principal aim was not to be paid but to see how this future generation grew with their big idea on a regular scale. Rocketship students have dedicated themselves to work extra hard, and this has improved their performance. Danner who is the founder thought of taking his model to expand across the nation to charter for 50 cities by 2020.
Stephen McMahon who is the president of the San Jose teachers union worried about the dual system where one filled with a charter that attracts motivated families and the other of traditional public schools populated with reluctant learners. Charter schools mostly financed but privately run any student who sought to join. But before families would seek out a charter school then apply, and if the demand exceeded capacity, then a lottery seat was entered. The charter was located across the community requiring families to transport their children to and fro each day hence it became so expensive for them.
